Our Immersive Learning Day for our Summer topic was packed with fun activities. We began the day by trying to draw a fierce Viking warrior. We then looked at some Saxons/Viking riddles and then created some of our own. Next, we created brooches using cardboard, string and tin foil as these were a very common piece of jewellery worn in those times. We also made Viking shields and created some fantastic Viking longboat artwork.
On Monday 9th June we were lucky enough to visit the Jorvik Viking Centre for the day. We had such a fantastic day and learnt many things. We began by taking a trip around the reconstructed Jorvik Viking town on motorised cars. It taught us about how life would have been in the Viking era on the streets of York. We then went to DIG where we saw animal skeletons (one dating from the 7th century) and became archaeologists! We finally had a Viking Saga workshop, where our guide told us Viking stories and a few of us even became actors in a short Viking play.
Last week, Year 5 were lucky enough to have a British Paralympian Krysten Coombs and some of his team visit them. Over the course of a morning, the children took part in Energy Saving Activities and tried to complete a mission to save as much energy as possible. In between activities, they had to complete Power Up exercises to get them ready. It was a fantastic morning and the children had a great time!
This week we had a visitor from Ralph Thoresby who delivered a teamworking and resilience workshop. Over the course of an afternoon, we completed many different activities that required lots of skills including teamworking, listening, patience, resilience, determination and stamina. We made marshmallow and spaghetti towers, tried to save 'Fred' the snake sweet from the lake (plate), built a tower out of cups only using a elastic band and even tried to write all together using string and a whiteboard pen. The children did a fantastic job of working as a team and supporting each other in what were some difficult challenges.
